The Middle East is a phrase coined by the British around the middle of the 19th century. It has no clearly defined borders but is traditionally perceived to represent the part of Central Asia west of Afghanistan up to Turkey. This comprises roughly 17 countries including many of those bordering the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea.
The Middle East is the birthplace of three of the world’s largest religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Middle Eastern countries have a rich collection of stamps dating back to when many of the countries were kingdoms though under the umbrella of the erstwhile British umbrella. Many stamps issued by Persia (Iran), Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Egypt bear impressions of crowned heads, now relegated to history.
Issues relating to Israel’s independence in 1948 are scarce and valued collector’s items.
Currently, many stamps emanating from Middle Eastern countries are representative of their religious, cultural and political heritage. All this and more is available locally in Los Angeles.
