The first postage stamps of Africa were issued in April 1891 during the existence of the British Central Africa Protectorate. These were produced by overprint.
A huge number of post offices were opened in Africa during the year of 1891 and the necessity of Surcharged BSAC stamps became more significant in the year 1892, 1893 and 1895. The African stamps produced during this time were printed featuring the protectorate's coat of arms and were inscribed in the British dominated Central Africa. Later, in August 1897, a new design was introduced. These stamps bore the coat of arms but the back ground was changed to clear. The next significant change in the history of African stamps came when the government issued embossed revenue stamps overprinted with Internal Postage.
African stamps stand as evidence of the continent’s rich history and culture. Many of these stamps are a collector’s pride and they can be found locally in Los Angeles.
