Stamps

Stamps are unique marks or impressions made on a piece of paper used to signify the payment of a certain fee or tax. There are different types of stamps- revenue stamp and postage stamp. Postage stamps include airmail, express mail, local post stamps etc. The study of stamps is called Philately. Many people also consider stamp collecting as a hobby. Stamp collectors contribute a huge portion to the revenue of some small countries. Los Angeles has a great collection of stamps available to purchase..

The first postage stamp, “Penny Black” was introduced on 1st May 1840 in Ireland and United Kingdom of Great Britain. The other countries followed soon with their own postage stamps. Since U.K. was the first country to introduce a stamp, it did not include its name on the stamp. This is followed until now as U.K. stamps still do not have their name on them. The Monarch’s head is used to identify them.
