Musical instruments can be divided into four categories on the basis of the mechanism that they utilize to make sounds. Common ways instruments make sounds are by vibrating strings. The common string instruments are violin, guitar, cello, bass and viola. Wind instruments make sounds by the vibration of air in a pipe or tube. Flute, clarinet and saxophone are some examples. Brass instruments make sounds as a result of blowing into them; the trumpet is one example. Percussion instruments make sounds when they are hit or shaken for example a drum and xylophone.
