Super audio CDs or SACDs are a read-only, high resolution, light sensitive audio disc format introduced by Philips and Sony electronics. SACD is developed to offer a high resolution audio in both surround sound and stereo modes.
While SACD was launched in 1999, it is not widely used by the mainstream market. The modern super audio players and super audio recording, however, are slowly gaining popularity. Super audio CDs have the same physical dimension as a typical compact disc; their storage capacity is identical to a standard DVD and it converts audio data using the ultra-modern Direct Stream Digital system.
Super audio CDs resolution is only 1 bit and performance rate is 2822.4 kHz. Super audio CDs store audio files using a special process called Direct Stream Digital or DSD, which is different from traditional Pulse Code Modulation or (PCM) normally used by CDs.
