UMD format is a proprietary format which is used by the Sony PSP or PlayStation portable. The discs used in this format are considerably smaller than standard sized discs.
UMD discs are used for the video games and the movies which are available to be played on the Sony PSP. The biggest advantage that this format provides is that it enables up to 1.8GB of data to be stored on a mini disc. This means it has more than twice the capacity of a standard CD while remaining less than half the size of the CD which helps to reduce the size and weight of the PSP.
