Exonumia are numismatic items other than paper money and coins such as medals, tokens and scrip. These include encased coins, elongated coins, and souvenir medallions, tags, counter stamped coins, badges, and wooden nickels. The definition of Exonumia also extends to non-coins which are or are not legal tenders such as cheques, and similar papers.
When actual money was not easily available in the United States, many Exonumia items were used as currency. Medals, however, are an exception to this definition since they were not used as currency. Tokens on the other hand were used to facilitate commerce and advertising.
Medals and tokens differ in that medals have no monetary value and therefore can’t be used as money. A good exonumist is supposed to pay attention not only to the history behind the items, but also to the shape of the items as well as the type of item. These can all be found locally in Los Angeles.
