The most recent important amendments in Canadian currency were the removal of the $1 and $2 bills in 1987 and 1996 and their substitution with coins of new design. The $1 coin (nick name = ‘loonie’) were first released in 1987 and are informally called ‘loonie’ as it has a common loon on its surface. The $1 coin replaced both the voyageur design-silver dollar coins and 1 dollar bank note. It is made of nickel and coated with golden bronze.
The $2 coin carries a picture of a polar bear on its reverse and was first issued in 1996. Whereas US failed to introduce a dollar coin by a number of attempts, the new Canadian dollar coins had become popular overnight due to the fact that the government and mint forced the change by withdrawing the $1 and $2 bills from the circulation of currency.
